Are left-pawed dogs really smarter?
M y dog Rosie is left. Every time she plays with her toys, she uses her left front leg to drag them into line.
The ear itch? It's his left front leg that does the scratching.
Which puts it in a minority of 10 percent of people who are left.
The two halves of the human brain has evolved to specialize in different functions, according to scientists. One consequence of this "handedness" is that in the majority of 90 percent, the right hand, controlled by the left side of the brain, is the prerogative of choice for writing, drawing, throwing and other tasks finely controlled motor.
But Rosie is a dog, you say.
Scientists have found that this kind of limb preference is not confined to our species. Chickens preferentially scratch for food with their right foot, laboratory mice favor one forelimb over another, and several kinds of primates also exhibit "handedness."
Even toads seem to prefer using their right paw.
So that was your biology lesson for the day.
A friend suggests that I should break my dog of her left-handedness.
"If she had to write anything, you couldn't read it," he said.
"Her signature is perfectly legible," I said. "It's her left paw print. Do I sense a certain hostility to us lefties?"
"Everything's harder for you," he said. "Bowling, using scissors, hitting a ball, setting the table."
"How is training my dog to be right-handed going to improve her life?" I asked.
"She'll get along better socially with her peers," he said.
"Aren't we carrying this politically correct business to extremes?" I asked. "Right or left, Rosie always puts her best paw forward.

To forestall this attempt at 'domination', owners should always move the dog's paw or chin off their leg. Owners are urged always to go through doors and gates in front of their dog. Some trainers have even come up with elaborate lists of these
Its speed and mechanical clarity allows a trainer to mark with great precision the behavior for which the dog is being reinforced. A big focus on the Sdao seminar was the fact that a variety of reinforcers unique to a pet's preference must be paired

And! During "Miss Fury's" first couple of years the heroine typically prowled around in a skintight, basic-black body suit with pointy little cat ears and panther-paw fingers and toes très silly. OK, then: Who of the two was the very first on the
How to Determine Your Dog's Paw Preference
How can you determine your dog’s paw preference? It’s easy! Use one or more of the following methods to test your pup and repeat the tests to look for patterns. 1. Place a treat under the couch and just within reach of your dog to see which paw she uses to reach for it. 2. Watch which paw your dog uses to hold a bone with while chewing on it. 3. Place a thin piece of adhesive tape on your dog’s snout (just for a minute!) to look at which paw she uses to remove it. 4. Place a treat-filled Kong directly in front of your dog to see which paw he uses to hold it to get the food out; your dog may use either paw or both paws. Feel free to share your findings in the comment section.
