Students to intern with county water, sewerage authority

Coweta County science students will be learning about Coweta's water and wastewater treatment as part of an "advanced STEM internship."

STEM is the new buzzword for "science, technology, engineering and mathematics," said Donald White, science curriculum specialist for the Coweta County School System, at Wednesday's meeting of the Coweta County Water and Sewerage Authority board of directors.

"I just want thank you for considering this," said Mark Whitlock, CEO of the Central Educational Center. "This is an opportunity to inject a level of relevance into the advanced requirements that students have today."

One intern will go to the B.T. Brown Water Treatment Plant while the other student will intern on the sewage treatment side.

They will probably swap out mid-semester, said Ellis Cadenhead, general manager of the water and sewerage authority. The authority has also requested a technology intern, he said.

The internships will run 8 to 9:30 a.m. each school day, said White. The students, all high school seniors, will be able to get back to school for their second-period class. The internships will run for a semester initially, though they may be expanded.

"We would love to see them continue to work for the entire year," White said.

The internship is based on the CEC's work-based learning program, and the students will get "a direct high school credit ... a very distinguished high school credit," Whitlock said.

Students will be paired with a "mentor teacher" who has worked in the science industry, White said.

The school system put together a "hold harmless" agreement for the internship with another industry, and authority attorney Melissa Griffis is tweaking it for the authority.

The agreement would protect the authority from any kind of liability "if anything happens to the students while they are here. The school system has to maintain a liability insurance policy," Griffis said. The policy specifically states the students are neither employees nor independent contractors, and also includes a confidentiality agreement.
