"It was slow for a while, but it started picking up here and now it's Katie-bar-the-door," Thompson said on his cell phone from the lake. "Here it is, the middle of the day and we have got this entire lake all to ourselves."

Thompson, a guide on the lake and owner of Eagle Creek Outfitters, knew exactly why they had the lake to themselves. The sweat stinging his eyes and "dripping everywhere" was a big clue. Most fishermen aren't interested in getting quite that hot just to catch a few fish. Even recreational boating isn't all that fun when the water surface temperature is 92 degrees. "Mine and Charles' wives would tell you we're stupid," he said.

Dropping white and black-and-white jigging spoons to benches and humps 15 to 20 feet deep turned up all manner of fish Wednesday, including all three species of catfish, he said. A buffalo, carp and a drum even found their way into the boat, but the white bass were the most plentiful, and most fun, fish of the day.

The fish are staying cool down in the darker depths. "When you pull them up and grab one, you realize 'that thing is a lot cooler than I am,' " Thompson said.

The fishing is pretty easy. Just look for humps at 15 to 20 feet right off the river channel and drop white jigging spoons, Thompson said.

Mid-summer white bass fishing on lakes like Fort Gibson and Grand is par for the course, he said. For a die-hard fisherman it just means dressing properly, using sunscreen and, as Thompson put it, "grabbing plenty of water and Gatorade and just having fun."

Way up north: Earlier this month, a father and son from Broken Arrow found hot fishing in a very cool place. July 12 found Randy Buchman and his 14-year-old son, Grant, on Bolton Lake, about 225 miles north of Winnipeg in Northern Manitoba, Canada.

The rookies went north with a group of people who have been going to Manitoba for years and worked some beginner's luck magic. Grant led the group of 13 adults for most trophies caught on the lake that week.

They fished for northern pike and walleye – Randy landed a 42-inch pike on a rainy, cold, first day on the lake July 11. But the next day, they made their mark on lake trout.

On July 12, they landed four trophy lake trout, which are over 30 inches. Grant caught three, and his father caught one.
