St. Damian's CYO dinner raffle raises $5000
Fund meals elegant new Catholic youth ministryWhen three Catholic parishes merged in Ocean City last fall in the parish of Saint-Damien, Marlene Sheppard wanted to create a Ministry of Youth Catholic news. For start-up funds for this project, Marlene draw a five-course gourmet dinner for eight served by municipal officials and county, with an evening of entertainment.
After raising more than $ 5,000, the drawing was held with confectioner Boardwalk Hank Glaser holding the winning ticket. The dinner party was held several weeks ago on a lovely Friday evening at the home of Susan Sheppard and Frank Faverzani.
Marlene chose her daughter and son-in-law’s home as they have a large formal dining room and piano in the living room for entertaining. When Marlene invited this columnist to be a celebrity server, I accepted with great pleasure.
Sharon Kruk and Ken Moore, entertainers at the Showboat Casino in A.C., provided instrumental music, and Father Michael Rush served up libations as guests began to arrive.Marlene and her daughter Susan with their good friend John Quaranta prepared the dinner and put the finishing touches on the appetizers when I got to work.
Nora Faverzani showed me the pretty dining room set with linen tablecloth and napkins, fine china, crystal and sterling silver. Freshly cut hydrangeas from the yard Marlene made a beautiful centerpiece on the table with place cards and of course menu printed by Nora for her grandmother.
Gary Schaffer, John Flood and Stan Duży looked sharp white shirt, black bow tie, cummerbunds and shorts.
Hank Glaser dressed for the occasion in a sport jacket and tie bright blue. He arrived with his sister Ginnie Berwick and friends Lynn and Jane Sennett Pizagno. Joann Del Vescio called husband, Joe, who was stuck in traffic on the promenade, for his ETA.
Linda and Larry Carnuccio completed the guests. Linda and Larry told me about their trip 12-day mission in a remote village in Africa with their son, Dr. Michael Carnuccio, who was on his sixth mission. They also traveled to Spain and Portugal where they met Jeanne Crotty, Tom Burgess and Beverly and Ron Denney.
Linda is excited their son, Phillip Carnuccio, is the guest speaker at the Tabernacle on Sunday, August 14. Joann Del Vescio was surprised when she discovered her boss, Stone Harbor Mayor Suzanne Walters, was serving her dinner. Katie Haviland, new youth minister at St. Damian’s, joined this columnist and Rita Fulginiti to serve hors d’oeuvres to the guests as they relaxed in the living room.
