Ruth Ham: Shapleigh voters to address new ambulance, Hooper land at special ...

During a special town meeting on Saturday, Sept. 10, the town will ask voters to approve the purchase of a new ambulance, as the Shapleigh Rescue Squad's current one has been frequently taken out of service as a result of electrical problems and other issues.

Funds have been set aside for this purpose. This purchase would not be for a second ambulance, as the current one will be sold.

Also during the special meeting, the town will seek to use unappropriated funds to acquire the Hooper property next to the Shapleigh Town Hall, in order that the additional space will suit the town's growing needs. Shapleigh voters are encouraged to attend a public hearing, which will be held a week or two before the special meeting, in order to learn about the proposal and provide feedback. Shapleigh Community Day filled with variety and fun

Children attending Shapleigh Community Day on July 23 gathered in a circle on the lawn at Shapleigh Commons to be introduced to exotic animals by Derek Small, of Granite State Zoo, of Rochester, New Hampshire. In addition to showing the animals, the handler gave a history of the species, their lifestyles and natural habitats. The children were told how to pet the various animals — basically, it is not wise to ever touch them on the head or around the ears.

The first presentation was a baby Wallabee cuddled in a special fabric pouch. This pouch raised her comfort level because she was used to being in her mother's pouch.

A nine-banded armadillo was the next surprise. There are nine types of armadillos, but only one type that lives in North America. The nine-banded variety does not roll itself into a ball for protection; it is only the three-banded members that do. Armadillos can be as small as a golf ball or as large as 100 pounds. If armadillos want to cross a stream or river, they hold their breath, which they can do for at lest ten minutes, and they walk across the stream or river bed. If the distance is too great to cross in 10 minutes, they merely swallow air until they become inflated enough to float across. The only enemy the armadillo actually has is a jaguar, an animal with the strongest bite of all animals.

A beautifully sleek Serval, another member of the Granite State Zoo animal team, was the next presentation. Named Isis, when mature she will be capable of running at speeds of 20 to 25 miles per hour.
