Lakeside Recovery 17U baseball team wins again

The Lakeside Recovery 17U baseball team exploded for four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning Wednesday en route to an 8-6 victory against the Gonzaga Prep Bulldogs in the state AA American Legion Tournament in Spokane.

Curtis Kojima, James Ferris, Patrick Harrod and Frazier Krall each had two hits for Lakeside Recovery, which is 2-0 in the tournament. Lakeside Recovery played Burlington on Thursday in the winners’ bracket at Gonzaga Prep.

Pitcher Jacob Chinery went the distance for Lakeside Recovery. He struck out nine batters.

Lakeside Recovery, 41-18 on the season, scored twice in the first inning and then plated single runs in the second and third innings. The team then put the contest away with the four-run fourth.

On Tuesday, Lakeside Recovery scored three times each in the fifth and sixth innings as it defeated the Mead Panthers 6-2 in the opening round of the 16-team tournament. The tournament has two brackets with eight teams at University High School and the other eight at Gonzaga Prep.

David McIlvaine, of Issaquah High School, had two hits and scored two runs in Lakeside Recovery’s victory against Mead. Chinery and Ferris, both of Newport, each had two hits. Winning pitcher Levi Novak, of Newport, pitched a complete game and struck out nine.

Wickswat continues hot pitching

Matt Wickswat, a former Issaquah High School standout, has provided the Winston-Salem, N.C., Dash with some hot pitching of late. Wickswat, a lefthander, picked up his fifth straight victory July 30 when the Dash defeated Myrtle Beach, S.C., 6-1 in a Class A Carolina League contest.

Wickswat, 5-1 on the season, struck out seven batters.

Jesuit Fr. Terry Charlton Visits US to Raise Awareness for St ...

Fr. Terry Charlton, SJ , founder and chaplain of   St. Aloysius Gonzaga High School in Nairobi, Kenya–the world’s first high school for AIDS affected youth–is in the US through September to share the good news and raise awareness about the school.

Founded in 2004, St. Al’s has grown from a makeshift classroom to a new, modern facility that opened in 2010 and is helping to make dreams come true for students who have lost one or both parents to AIDS. To meet with Fr. Terry or help plan an event to further the school’s mission, please email  Jeff Smart or call the province office at 800-922-5327. As we celebrate the feast day of our Patron Saint, Aloysius Gonzaga, it is above all an occasion to be grateful for so many gifts and to re-commit ourselves to our ideals.  In Nairobi, we celebrate at the school itself by having a day-long celebration beginning with Sunday Eucharist and filled with speeches, dances and skits, not to forget a tasty lunch.  Integral to our celebration is to remember you, who do so much to make our school possible and to keep you up-to-date about our situation and needs.  We thank God for you and thank you for all you are doing for us.  You are helping students living in Kibera slum who have lost one or both parents to AIDS.  Your support gives them what is almost impossible without you – education and hope for a better future! The best indication of using the facility well might be academic progress. This is most evident in the performance of our new Form 1 students (freshmen) in their marks for Term I that ended in early April.  Generally, a class average grade is in the middle of the C range (55), but the freshman average was in the middle of the B range (65).  All individual averages were in the middle C range and above, that is, no C- or below, and this is cause for celebration.  The only variables that we can see accounting for the new, higher level of performance are the new school, the provision of sufficient text books for all of our students and fully equipping our three new science laboratories.  We suppose it heightens self-esteem in our students.  A good environment and a good facility seem to be inspiring faculty and students to give their all. In the past, we have had occasional one-day retreats for our students.  This year we committed to implementing a retreat program which will continue on a yearly basis.  The students were very happy with their experiences in these retreats, which focused on self-understanding and self-acceptance in the context of faith.  We will have a special 3-day, residential “Quest” retreats, for the junior boys and girls.  These retreats will be facilitated by 8 student leaders and staff of Regis High School in New York City, one of our Jesuit partner schools.  Our juniors will be initiated into the Quest experience so that leaders can be selected from among them to lead the experience for the next year’s junior class; thus, a tradition is begun that will be passed on to future students. We are currently facing challenges in continuing to raise the necessary funds to provide the well-rounded, quality education to which we are committed.  This commitment, of course, includes our graduate program of community service and sponsoring college studies for our graduates.  There are new costs involved in the new facility.  For example, we have employed a combination grounds-keeper and handyman with special skills in carpentry.  Previously, we had no grounds and not much to repair.  While our high school is basically at its current capacity of 280, we continue to add more students each year to the graduate program than finish because our first graduating classes were 19 and 31, whereas we are now graduating 60-65 students each year. As we continue to provide a quality education for youth who otherwise could not afford to attend high school, let alone college, we rely on your continuing generosity.  I am going to be in the USA from 23 June to 21 September so, if you would have a group to which you would like me to speak to about St. Aloysius, I would welcome the opportunity and hope we could arrange this.  If you can help us spread the news about St. Aloysius to groups or individuals, please contact Jeff Smart at the Jesuit Advancement Office (see contact information below).  If you have not yet committed to sponsoring a student, we invite you to join our Sponsorship program whereby with a gift of $1,000 or more you can sponsor a particular student who will exchange letters with you. The Society of Jesus, also known as Jesuits is a religious order of priests and brothers in the Roman Catholic Church.
