A rose is not just a rose, despite Gertrude Stein’s edict, especially when it has been created by eminent French rose nursery Les Roses Anciennes André Eve. Eve made his reputation with glorious old-fashioned style varieties that bloom from spring through autumn. On show in the Tuileries was the nursery’s latest prizewinner, Jardin de Granville, named for the rose-bedecked Normandy garden of couturier Christian Dior, whose childhood home in Granville is now a museum. The new rose will be used by Dior in perfumes and cosmetics. With pale pink petals edged in white that open into a deep rose surrounding a golden yellow center, the Granville won the Parisian Jardins de Bagatelle’s annual international competition for the best new rose. Its subtle fragrance only shows its power when the blooms are gathered in bouquets indoors . www.roses-anciennes-eve.com
One of the show’s most captivating proposals was a verdant “parasol”. Designer Germain Bourré’s Dais Végétal, made of a steel base and a steel cable or polyethylene strand net, can be planted with grapevines, honeysuckle, jasmine or clematis that sways in the breeze to provide the soft, dappled natural shade of a tree. One Dais shelters a minimum 60-square-foot area, and a pair can be joined up to produce a delightful vine-covered dining pergola.
What you might want to slip under this leafy gloriette are French designer Christophe Pillet’s zigzag outdoor dining chairs for Kristalia. Called Pulp, they’re notable for their technical prowess and the sleek polypropylene silhouette that echoes the seated human form. Hardy, easy to stack and clean, they come in white, black, brown, beige and a fetching coral red, and they look equally at ease inside a contemporary decor. www.kristalia.it
On a terrace or balcony, in the garden or courtyard, French designer Patrick Nadeau’s new-look, thermo-lacquered steel fountain for the brand new French company Laorus offers a compact, colorful option for a multitude of uses. Available in chartreuse, orange, violet or Majorelle blue, the fountain’s flat, L-shaped stand spouts a spigot over a three-legged bucket-shaped basin equipped with a second spigot. One model curves into a top shelf for a flowerpot, another has a hook on the back for looping a garden hose. Both work well for washing hands, boots, fruit and vegetables, watering plants or playing splash games with the kids.

Your Questions About Shower Bases Tile
How do I prepare the floor to install a shower base?
I am going to install a kohler shower base. I am planning to tile the floor in front of the base. It will look similar to this:

Assuming the floor is made of 2x12s with plywood on top, what else is needed on the floor between the shower base or tile ? any sort of membrane, or can I just place the shower base directly onto the plywood base and connect the drain. At the very least I suppose I can’t just put thinset on the area in front of the base and lay tile . I understand the vapor barrier and such on the walls, but am not sure what is done to the floor..
What is the proper way to do this?
Adam answers:You can install it directly on the plywood, The remainder of the floor needs an underlayment such as wonderboard, (a cement board like drywall). The underlayment should be set in multi-purpose thinset and nailed to the plywood. The ceramic can then be installed on top of the underlayment, make sure you use multi-purpose thinset for your tile if you have a porcelean tile, or you will not get a good bond.
How to replace the old shower mixer?I Have tried to replaced the old shower mixer with hot and cold that had broken, but when I breake the tile , the base of the existing shower mixer is rusty. I have the new mixer, but I have no idea how to fit the the new one without breaking the entire wall, because there is no enough space to fit the hot and cold and to the shower side pipe and also no way to fit the treaded pipe to the treaded shower mixer
Adam answers:I am not sure of your layout but most shower/tub work (when tile is involved) is done on the opposite side of the wall. A hole for working on the valves is cut and an access panel is installed for future maintenance. This access may be a closet in the bath or even a wall in another room next to the bath. Cutting/removing tile is always a last resort.
Adam answers:A good two-part epoxy adhesive should do the trick for your tile. Especially if you are going to be bonding up against the metal you see.
Stay away from Mastic in the shower area. It’s popular because of its price and pre-mixed advantage, but the reality is that Mastic is organic and can not only re-emulsify when wet, but it’s great mold food. Use mortar that advertises an anti-microbial agent for all tile work in wet areas.
