Nevada roots out fraudulent business license exemptions

Nevada Secretary of State Ross Miller says the state is missing out on millions in revenue because of fraudulent business license exemptions.

Businesses working in the state must pay $100 a year for a business license, but some are exempt, including government entities and home-based businesses.

However, he revealed to 8NewsNow.com that more than 60,000 companies claimed to be home-based and earning less than $27,000 a year. Many of these had wrongly made the claim.

“We have so many cheaters out there,” Miller said. “We have a hole that’s about $24 million over the biennium that has grown out of this issue and a substantial number of companies that are claiming exemptions that they’re probably not entitled to.”

Some businesses claiming to be home-based were found to be operating out of commercial spaces, while others have earned more in revenue than the exemption allows.

The news provider reported that Miller’s office has contacted home-based businesses to verify their eligibility for exemptions.
