McLean plays vital role for RHS football team
High intensity is an apt description for Pete McLean. I’ve witnessed him prowl the sidelines at Tiger Hollow during football games, moving between the 20-yard line markers with the speed of a gazelle and the cognitive focus of a surgeon.McLean is Ridgefield High School’s strength and conditioning coach. His hard work in football resulted in McLean being named the 2011 Assistant Coach of the Year by the Connecticut High School Coaches Association.
“I knew that (RHS head football coach) Kevin (Callahan) had nominated me, but I never thought about it again until he informed me about the award,” said McLean. “I was happy, of course, but more proud about the success we’ve had with the students at the school. The students are the reason I won the award.”
McLean, a native of Pound Ridge, N.Y., first came to work at Ridgefield High in the mid 1990s, but left in 1997. When Callahan became head coach in 1999, McLean came back as a volunteer coach to work on strength and conditioning. Twelve seasons later, Callahan calls McLean “perhaps the most important member of the entire coaching staff. Pete works with our players on a daily basis; he’s the one monitoring their progress, especially during the off-season when the kids need to stay in shape.
“His approach is hands-on and unique,” added Callahan. “His results with the players speak for themselves. The players gravitate towards him as they know they will get results from working with Pete.”
After graduating with a degree in biology from Dickinson College in Pennsylvania, McLean earned his master’s in exercise physiology from the University of Pittsburgh. This was in the early 1980s when sports training as a profession was beginning to get traction. The boom of the mid-1980s gym scene led McLean to hone his training with clients looking for specialized programs.
A competitive athlete, McLean became a 1st Division Premier Rugby player in 1991, with a club in White Plains. He still plays today as a winger in an over-35 league.
“Rugby is one of my passions,” he said. “It’s a tough sport physically, yet the mental aspect is equally important. It’s also a sport that I love because of the camaraderie of the players. With rugby, there’s no half-hearted efforts. You’re either in 100% or out.”
In 1992, he became a volunteer assistant strength and conditioning coach with the New York Jets. The Jets were in one of their many downward spirals as a franchise, but the year McLean spent with the team proved invaluable.

While the recent success is a sure motivator for the future, Stacey says his involvement in coaching was almost inevitable. "I think everyone who has a passion for league comes back to the game," he says. "I like the physicality of league. In rugby you
The Bears were supposed to use the rugby field for spring practice but new turf was not installed properly, forcing the team to hold most of its spring drills at Contra Costa College in San Pablo. Tedford said the field is ready to go for camp.
He hasn't been in any talks since, despite at least half a dozen clubs discussing their coaching options. Now don't get me wrong. Mal is a wonderful figurehead for Queensland rugby league and a marvellous ambassador for the game.
AS THE globe's leading rugby nations work toward a seventh World Cup, there is still no exact science or conformity to the countdown. Even those from the same neck of the woods, ie, the Six Nations, are doing things very differently.
Super 15 Rugby: Mowen happy with early training sessions ...
The Brumbies’ Ben Mowen, formerly of the Waratahs, believes it is a good idea for Super Rugby clubs to start training as early as possible to get a jump on the season ahead.
Australian Super Rugby sides generally start their training in November, but with a new head coach and a high turnover of players, the Brumbies got together for a recent four-day training camp.
Mowen told the Canberra Times: “It’s definitely the first time I’ve started training in July. It’s all about putting down the foundations going into the pre-season, by the time late October and early November comes around we know all the systems we’re going to use.”
The Brumbies have also scheduled two more training camps in Sydney for the off-season as head coach Jake White attempts to strengthen both the team’s attack and defence.
However, Mowen was only able to take part in a few drills since he’s suffering from an ankle syndesmosis injury. The 26-year-old said he spent most of his time in the gym during the camp.
Mowen began his career with the Reds, but only appeared in one game for them before heading to the Waratahs. He’s now aiming to claim the number six jersey with the Brumbies after it was vacated by Rocky Elsom and Mitchell Chapman.
Even though July is early to start training, Mowen said he’s not worried about suffering from burnout next season.
He said: “Eddie Jones had a philosophy when I was at the Reds which was to get through a lot of training in a short period. If you don’t do it in the right format then it can lead to injuries.”
He added that it’s a good way for the Brumbies to earn some respect when the league kicks off.
The odds of Australia making the World Cup Final this year are now 2.25 with their odds of taking the Tri Nations Series at 3.60.
