BAGUIO CITY,July 31 -- Members of the city council last week listened to Department of Tourism regional director Purificacion Molintas as she recommended for a council-sponsored resolution supporting accreditation of tourism establishments and services, additional personnel for the city tourism office, and “harmonized funding” for suggested tourism programs.

The recommendation came in the wake of reported alleged 33 percent drop in tourism arrivals for the first quarter of 2011, for which RD Molintas said “structured data” is needed, and could be gathered through more city tourism personnel.

The report of alleged significant decline prompted Councilor Elmer Datuin to author a resolution calling for tourism officials to explain. It was then admitted that there is a lack of accurate information as tourism-related facilities listed do not include some in-house facilities, company housing, government-owned cottages, and other lodging establishment which could have housed more tourists.

Together with Hotel and Restaurant Association of Baguio (HRAB) top officer and Baguio Country Club general manager Anthony de Leon, and City Tourism officer Benny Alhambra, RD Molintas gave a 10-minute presentation of the city and region’s tourism progress from the past years.

The presentation showed that there are now 14 major destinations in the country from the previous eight, thus the need for the city to employ marketing strategies to invite more tourists.

Molintas also cited RA 9593, an act declaring national policy for tourism as an “engine of investment, employment, growth and national development,” for the local government to act accordingly.

She also recommended the accreditation of other tourism services such as tour guides for local tourism and ecotourism; transport facilities; specialty facilities such as restaurants, accommodation establishments; and the accurate identification of housing and lodging facilities.

Finance providers such as foreign exchange dealers were seen as crucial to the tourism industry, she said, as with investment promotions for the city. Secondary specialties like health, specifically medical facilities, including spa, sports and those for recreation should be looked into, she added.

Since we haven’t hung out for awhile now (last was during her wedding), we decided to have dinner and catch up. We both agreed to dine in Maya Taqueria. This became the highlight of my Cebu trip. I feel that this is the closest you can get to Mexican food in the Philippines (Do let me know if you have other restaurants in mind). When we got there at 8:00 pm, It was already full and a lot of have made advanced reservations. This was what I forgot to do, to reserve. But since we were already at Maya, they were kind enough to make a table outside. What I like about this restaurant is that they know how to bring out the flavors of the fresh ingredients they use. I noticed that the level of salt used in the dishes is very minimal. I am a self titled Food Artist who loves anything and everything about food. A freelancer who does food styling, recipe/menu dev't, demos, etc. My hobby is making food look pretty and mouth-watering! I also like eating out and enjoy cooking for family and friends.
