Falls County EDC sets goal - reverse 'downward spiral'

The “lots of good people” observation was supported at last week’s meeting which was hosted by Rosebud at their D. Brown Memorial Library. First, the backdrop for the meeting was a new billboard that will advertise Rosebud on US 77. The billboard is eight feet high and 12 feet wide. In addition to Rosebud’s slogan (“Welcome to Rosebud – We call it Home”) a drawing of roses and rosebuds adorns the billboard. Sharon Saunders of Rosebud, one of the Falls County “good people,” painted the roses.  Although he did not speak about his background, a Google search performed later revealed that he had served as Director of the Texas Emerging Technology Fund, Director of the Office of Employer Initiatives for the Texas Workforce Commission, Associate Vice Chancellor for Economic Development for The Texas A&M University System, member of the Texas and International Economic Development Councils, and, presently, Assistant Director for Corporate and Government Relations at the Texas A&M Energy Engineering Institute. In short, he is a ‘superstar’ with extensive experience in leveraging economic development resources to benefit businesses, communities, and local governments. But arguably the most important part of Ellison’s discussion was his description of the Texas Triangle. The Texas Triangle is the area demarcated by the Interstate highways connecting Dallas/Fort Worth, San Antonio, and Houston. It is one of 11 ‘megaregions’ in the United States and is inhabited by about 20 million people - 80% of the population of Texas.   Of the 66 counties that make up the Texas Triangle, Falls County is right dab in the center. This means that Falls County is within a three-hour drive of 20 million people. It goes without saying, Falls County’s central location within the Texas Triangle is a huge advantage for businesses either already located in or wanting to relocate to Falls County. Fort suggested that the Council have a program where people visit existing businesses to develop a Falls County business database. Among other questions, it was suggested that the businesses be asked about their successes and challenges, what type of help is needed from the Council, and a description of their business. Fort emphasized that the businesses must be assured that the information-gatherers honor confidentiality – and that there always has to be a follow-up.
