Over 150 people support Cancer Awareness Walk in Pemberton (SLIDESHOW)

Rev. Edwin Mathias, Pastor of St. Ann’s Church, and Kosko planned the evening so residents could honor the memory of relatives and friends who died from cancer and provide support for those who have survived. More than 50 members of St. Ann Church provided support staff to make the evening memorable. Luminaries lined the walking course and signs were posted in memory of loved ones. Walkers carried lighted vigil candles as they slowly circled the grounds. Walkers included the very young, teenagers, and the not so young. Children as young as 5 and adults in their 90s all joined the walk. Some walkers used canes and one young man walked using his prosthetic leg. They circled the grounds passing the lines of luminaries and memorial signs. Some stopped to sign the “Book of the Living” for cancer survivors or the “Book of the Deceased” for those we remember. The walk lasted one hour as residents solemnly paced along the course, but earlier preparations had taken several weeks. Many wore the special commemorative t-shirts which have been sold for the past few weeks. Advertising signs were placed in prominent locations around town and walkers were recruited through the Township Recreation Department, the Senior Center and St. Ann’s Church. Rev.
