Feature: Thunder in the Air: Ars reviews the mid-2011 MacBook Air
In preparation for this review, I read back over Jacqui Cheng's review of the original MacBook Air, released in January 2008. In hindsight, it's obvious that making a fully functional laptop light, ultra-thin, and optical drive-less was at least two years ahead of its time. The 2008 Air's CPU was underpowered, and its 1.8" hard drive was dog slow. The very expensive solid state drive (SSD) option wasn't much better, with 50MB/s reads and 14MB/s writes. Real world battery life was only 2.5 hours. There was no app store—most of Apple's and third-party software still came on CDs and DVDs.
Later in 2008, Apple released an improved MacBook Air that replaced the underpowered Intel GMA X3100 integrated GPU with the more capable Nvidia GeForce 9400M to drive the 1280x800 pixel display. Let's call this generation 1.5.
Generation 2 arrived last October when the MacBook Air line went SSD-only. By this time, SSD performance had improved beyond that of magnetic spinning hard disk drives, while the Nvidia GeForce 320M GPU increased graphics performance on par with low-end dedicated GPUs. The Air's screen resolution was also increased to 1440x900 pixels.
However, the CPU was actually slower than in the previous model—though in practice it often performed better, because, unlike the old Airs, the newer ones didn't have to throttle down the CPU speed to keep the system from overheating on a regular basis. The new models sported two USB ports, but peripherals were still limited by the maximum performance of the 480Mbps USB 2 connections. In addition, Apple also introduced an 11.6" model.
Now we have the third-generation MacBook Air. It sports Intel's latest Sandy Bridge Core i5 and i7 CPUs. These take "integrated graphics" to a new level: the GPU is actually integrated on the CPU die, though this does mean a return to Intel's GPUs, which always had a very bad reputation. The Mini DisplayPort connector that was used to drive external displays in previous generations of the Air has been transformed into a Thunderbolt port. The Thunderbolt port will still perform Mini DisplayPort duties if needed, but it's now a general purpose I/O port running at no less than 10Gbps.
With fast SSD storage, a faster CPU, and the Thunderbolt port to take care of I/O needs that go beyond what USB can provide, has the MacBook Air grown up to be a capable primary machine? (By "primary" machine, I mean something for those of us who need more from their computers than just a window to the Web.

There's room for a 2.5-inch hard disk drive instead, but this will increase the need for cooling, Stealth warns. The LPC-125LPM accepts up to 4GB of DDR3 memory via two SODIMM slots, according to Stealth. The device also has an internal Mini PCI
The system runs silent due to the most part because it uses a solid-state drive (SSD) versus a traditional hard disk drive, but occasionally when there is a lot of demand on the system the one and only fan in the MacBook Air can be a bit vocal.

I use two have dual 500Gb HDD + 64GB SSD inside my unibody macbook. I did love the quick boots/ and wake up time, but that SSD was killing valuable disk space. So now I have over +26GB of music, +100GB in Pics, and over +167GB in my movies folder
But this reduction in physical HDD size cannot continue. Flash solid state drives (SSD) will likely stop 1.8-inch disk drives from Toshiba in their tracks and threaten 2.5-inch disks longer term. How will the HDD industry retain its edge then?

Xslimmer 1.8.1 Mac Os X | 3.2 MB
Xslimmer removes wasted space on your Mac-s hard drive by removing the binary from either its PowerPC or Intel code (depending on the system architecture used). The result users report is that you can save 47% of your disk space.
For example, when running Xslimmer on Google Earth 4, it shrinks the size from 101MB to 52.8MB, which is a 47% reduction.
As the developer states, the driving goal of Xslimmer is to achieve size reduction without compromising functionality. As of version 1.2, the option to strip applications from unwanted language files and localizations is added. Version 1.2.7 improves Leopard support by automatically excluding Time Machine paths from the analysis process.
Additional features for safe use include a -blacklist- and a custom folder list (which is by default populated with key system locations). This prevents problems with applications (or the system itself) that will no longer work after size reduction.
With the -App Finder Genie-, a user can list all size reducible applications on the hard disk and choose to slim them and save a considerable amount of hard disk space.
