United Airlines gate agent 'Lovett' lives up to his name
DENVER - His first name, Rufus, may not live up to its biblical origin meaning "red-haired." But his last name sure seems to fit.
Rufus Lovett (pronounced 'Love-it') has been working with United Airlines for more than 35 years. If you have had the chance to meet him, you probably have not forgotten his candor. His custom greetings ("Boy, that's a nice hat you have?" and "I'll bet you have a lot to be thankful for," are just two of the ones we heard during our visit) never cease to draw a smile out of the customers he serves at Denver International Airport.
"My approach to my job... every day is a gift," Lovett said. "That's why it's called the present."
Lovett roams the B concourse at DIA, often operating the entire customer service end of his assigned gate on his own. When customers have a ticket problem, he takes care of it swiftly before inspiring a laugh or a grin with a quick quip or joke. When it's time to take tickets, Lovett offers a handshake and a hug before thanking a customer for flying with United.
"I've always been personable and friendly," Lovett said. "I want to make an impression and a lasting impression if I can. I'm a consumer too. So I endeavor to treat people the way I want to be treated."
Lovett says his joy for the job comes from his Christian faith. He wore a pin professing his faith (an artistic, gold-lettered 'Jesus') during the day we visited him at DIA.
"My faith... I've learned if you want to be happy, make someone else happy. God brings wonderful people into my path. Awesome people.
