Control-fixated minds do not allow for idle talk. These “types”, of course, do not have to be Muslims. I might do well to note here that at my wedding last July, in Brampton, my best man was Muslim: we stood sideby side, as brothers, before God.

Having seen the beautiful but incoherent, plot-lite film, The Tree of Life, it is clear any insecure person, male, coach, official, administrator, soldier, religious-type, bureaucrat, library-CEO, politician, what-have-you, may tersely order, “Don’t talk!” The audacious — as the rebelling son in this film does so well in speaking back to his father, a stiff-necked Mr. O’Brien, played by the plywoodish Brad Pitt — say to that, “But Sir, you spoke first ... just now.” As the sublime (but bogus) Irish author, the late Patrick O’Brian, put it pithily, epigrammatically, in his great historical/nautical series, “(At times) the beadle inside quite eats up the man.”

Small men and repressive or insecure regimes — great and small — silence opposition, dissent, and even people’s free voices. Insecure, concerned with appearances and political spin and/or fallout, the McGuinty government, intriguingly, buys silence where and when it can. Its cash dispensers arrived at a “number”, a settlement, pro tem one supposes in these litigious times, with the businesses, residents, and lawful property-owners of embattled, law-and-order-ignored Caledonia, on a slow Friday in July, for $20 million, as (unusually) the Province was about to be sued for non-policing via the OPP, which action the courts had certified.

Many good “town-reserve” relationships there had been blighted while the Premier’s office and the Ministry of the Attorney General gave rein to “race-based”, two-tier policing, bringing life and commerce in Caledonia to a screeching halt.

White Ontarians there have, generally, had their rights, freedoms, and protections trodden underfoot, while Dalton McGuinty has sought to be the most politically correct politician on the face of the earth. So, the old American political saying: “Boys go into politics to be something, while men enter politics to do something.”

Mr. McGuinty’s scare tactics toward white Ontarians have now cost in excess of $80 million in the ongoing mayhem he has permitted around Caledonia. And, the locals’ silence has now been bought, or rented at least, in the critical run-up period to the coming provincial election.

Fine Biblical tales that all should learn at public school, such as the story or Ruth, or such as David's standing up to Goliath in the Valley of Elah have been entirely proscribed, while the (gory, shallow) works of the likes of SE Hinton have been

Chicoan Jake McLaughlin perseveres in Hollywood

He landed the part and played a soldier in Paul Haggis' In The Valley Of Elah with actors Tommy Lee Jones, Charlize Theron and Susan Sarandon. After the gig ended, with a virtually empty acting résumé, McLaughlin struggled to get more roles.

Obama, You Leave Me No Choice!

It has been told that David slew Goliath in the Valley of Elah. He was bold, courageous and brave at the same time, as no other would take on this Phillistine giant. The question is, if you care about America and freedom, if you care about the future

The CinemaScope Cat: In The Valley Of Elah (2007)

Based on true events, a former military man (Tommy Lee Jones in an Oscar nominated performance) receives word his son (Jonathan Tucker) has recently returned to the U.S. and gone AWOL. After the son's body is found mutilated and burned, the father and a police detective (Charlize Theron) attempt to unravel the circumstances that led to his killing. Produced, written and directed by Paul Haggis (an Oscar winner for his CRASH screenplay), who structures his story in the form of a murder mystery. This allows Haggis to pull the viewer in and incorporate other themes like post traumatic stress disorder and the war in Iraq instead of a somber heavy handed treatise on the subject. Alas, the film was still a box office failure and it deserved a better fate. The film is not without its flaws. Haggis goes for some cheap shots with Theron's sexist "good ol' boy" police compatriots who don't add anything to the film.
