Success on the golf course appears to be hereditary for the Burns family.

In the late 1920s, Dr. Hugh Burns of Scranton won the championship at the Country Club of Scranton three times. Later, his son Jack, of Clarks Summit, also won it three times - in 1968, '70 and '76.

Then, his grandson Tim, of Waverly, won the Pennsylvania State Junior Golf Championship at age 15 in 1976, and built on that feat by winning 11 club championships at Scranton.

Add one more generation to that list of successful players. Dan O'Rourke, the great-grandson of Hugh Burns, finished as runner-up in the New Jersey Junior Golf Championship. Like his uncle Tim, his breakthrough also came at the age of 15. He won all three of his matches, 3 and 2, to reach the final before falling in the title match at Basking Ridge Country Club near Scotch Plains, N.J.

Bill Gross and Bill Gaylord were medalists at the Member-Guest tournament in June, and each recently was presented with a Bulova watch with their name and score engraved on the back. That's especially nice because it will allow Gross to remind his partner it's time to make another birdie.

Sandy Schneider and Fran Durkin fashioned a winning score of 68 to edge Wendy Seamans and Mary Yablonski by a shot for the title in the women's member-guest tournament. Ellen Bugno and Kathy Emanuelson notched first flight laurels, nipping Sherry Moore and Patti Grecco by one. Second flight was claimed by Pauline Cassaro and Sue Labar on a match of cards over Lorraine Daniels and Mary Fox.

Not only is he the former club president, he's also a member of the hole-in-one club. Eddie D'Agostino, playing as the guest of Mike Addesa in the Doniald T. Nolan Memorial on Sunday, aced the eighth hole of the South Course, which was playing at 187 yards. He used a 3-wood while also playing with Don Mancuso and Joseph Alu. It wasn't the only ace of the weekend. Bruce Lucarelli, brother of member Mark Lucarelli, aced the eighth hole of the North Course using a 9-iron from 137 yards in a Nolan Seniority match. Also witnessing the event were Brian Bell Jr. and Bill Russell.

Winners in the lower half of the championship flight of the Donald T. Nolan tourney were Ed Mesko and Bill Briggs, who closed with 67 to pull away from Joe Grad-David Burkavage by five and Barry Westington-Dave Murdoch and Mickey Parry-Mike Perry by seven. Top two finishers in other flights of the Standard Division were: First, John Gershey-Joe Weiscarger, Ryan Swift-Ben Schubert; Second, Ken Reinheimer-Mike Napkori, Jim Fruehan-Mike Jaros; Third, Sean Buckman-Mike Mancuso, Brian Bell Sr.-Andrew Bell. In Seniority Division action, David Swisher and Joseph Barrett won the shootout for the overall title, winning a putt-off with Conrad Bosley and Jerry Zubert. Flight winners and runners-up were: A, Swisher-Barrett, Darryl Jayne-Jerry Burns; B, Joe Guzek-Dave Wadas, Carl Greco-Bernard Poveranda; C, Dan Santariello-Alan Silverman, Mark and Bruce Lucarelli; D, Steve Moore-Jesse Loughney, Joseph and Damon Cronkey; E, Bosley-Zubert, John Grow-Bill Bender.

What are the best types of wood to burn in my wood stove ...

Any dry hardwood will work well, but for keeping your chimney clean stay away from pine or other pine type trees that have a heavy pitch/sap content. oak has been a favorite because it is a very dense hot burning wood, that cuts and splits easily. with time you will learn to get a good hot fire burning and then adjust your damper to control the air to give a hot yet long burning fire. birch also burns well but because it is a less dense wood will burn faster (a good fire starter). where efficiency is concerned any hard wood that is dry and you can get it cheap or free, that’s what you might want to go for. when I was younger I cleared peoples property for of oakwilt infected oak trees so that wood was free except for my time. I also used elm and boxelder, but they are hard to cut and split. they burn fine once you get it dry though.

later I found that a local saw mill would sell their trimmings (slab wood) for quite cheap and it only had to be cut to length.

A reasonable answer is whatever the hardest wood that is easily available in your area. But for burning qualities, Oak, Maple and Locust are terrific. Locust is common here, and on the two acres we used to have, we had enough deadfall every year to keep the house heated.

It handles and splits more easily than oak. Maple’s more brittle. All three burn hot and CLEAN–they won’t gunk up your chimney as much as some of the softer woods.

Whatever it is, you’ll do best if it’s split and cut to the right size for your firebox, and is well seasoned and dry.
