Jeremiah 35: August 7—Integrity of commitment
Shortly before the events described in Jeremiah 35, the Babylonians suffered a temporary military setback from the armies of Egypt. King Jehoiakim viewed the Babylonian setback as an opportunity to stop payment of tribute money. As Nebuchadnezzar marched towards Jerusalem, the events of Jeremiah 35 occurred. Judah faced a decision, “Will we as the people of God trust international diplomacy or will we trust God?” To phrase the question in another form, “Will be trust the wisdom of humans or the wisdom of God?”Believers perpetually encounter this question on a daily basis. Will I keep my commitment to the Lord or will I succumb to the folly of human wisdom?
In this situation, God communicated a message to the prophet Jeremiah about the importance of integrity in our commitments. Jeremiah communicated God’s message by means of one of his famous object lessons. Jeremiah illustrated the importance of integrity in a commitment to God by means of a family or clan loyal to the commandments of a forefather. What lessons did Jeremiah teach to his generation? What lessons should believers today derive from the prophet’s object lessons?
First, believers should identify examples of faithfulness (Jer. 35:1-8a). Jeremiah sought out the Rechabites as examples of faithfulness. The family descended from the Kenites, a nomadic tribe, whose name means “smith.” Moses’ father-in-law, Jethro, was a Kenite. The name “Rechab” means “rider” or “charioteer” and archaeology reveals the common use of the term “Rechab” for charioteer in the Ancient Near East. The tribe became associated with the tribe of Judah; however, the tribe was never absorbed into another group and maintained a separate existence. Jonadab, or Jehonadab, was the most famous Kenite other than Jethro. Jonadab supported the famous charioteer Jehu in his bloody purge of Baal worshipers. Canaanite Baal worship involved drunkenness. Jonadab commanded the family to separate themselves from common practices associated with pagan worship such as wine.
Jeremiah escorted the Rechabites into the temple rooms of the three highest temple authorities other than the high priest. The Rechabites encountered the prophet of God (Jeremiah) and the man of God (Hanan) at the place of God (the temple). These nomadic blacksmiths and charioteers steadfastly kept the vows established by their forefather. God promised the Rechabites would faithfully serve God for a long time.
