Allegiant posts profitable second quarter

Allegiant Travel, which operates Allegiant Air with flights from Rapid City to Las Vegas and Mesa, Ariz., announced on Monday that its second quarter of 2011 was the company's 34th consecutive profitable quarter, with net income down 29 percent over the second quarter of 2010, to $11.9 million. The airline saw a $19 increase in passenger fares to $91, offsetting a $15 per passenger increase in fuel costs. It added its first Boeing 757 aircraft on two Las Vegas routes and is working to add flights to Hawaii in some markets next summer.

Company president Andrew C. Levy said Allegiant Travel projects continued growth in its hotel room sales.

"Room nights grew over 12 percent versus the second quarter last year, with almost half of the increase generated away from our traditionally strong Las Vegas market," he said. "Growth in the third-party segment is a high priority and we continue to make investments in management and technology to further that goal.
