Amazon tightens grip on online book sales
It had already purchased another large rival, Canadian-based ABEbooks (originally Advanced Book Exchange), which links thousands of online independent booksellers around the globe.
The Book Depository is popular with Australian readers, partly because of the huge range of titles in its catalogues but also because it has been offering "free" shipping to Australia.
The free shipping was actually a bit of an illusion. As website Lifehacker.com.au has pointed out, Book Depository adjusts the price of books according to the country you're buying from -- which LifeHacker brands "a tad deceptive".
However, the price of a book delivered to Australia in most cases is well below what you would pay at a local bookshop. Whether that will remain in the Amazon remains to be seen.
Says Neill Denny, editor of British magazine Bookseller: "The publishing industry will be concerned about the concentration of power in the hands of Amazon, they do not like the grip it has on the online bookstore as it is .. "
The Book Depository on Twitter said it would continue to operate independently of its new American owner, at least for now.And notes that DoubleClick AbeBooks, one of our favorite e-shopping sites, continued to operate in what appears to be an atmosphere free Amazon.
Almost all second-hand bookshops in the world, including many in Australia, appears to be part of AbeBooks, offering used, rare, first edition and out-of-print titles, the status of each described in detail loving.
But more and more sellers Abebooks also offer new books. This is an excellent site to get competitive quotes.
DoubleClick last week put all three properties Amazon - AbeBooks, Book Depository and Amazon.com -- to the test, to see which could come up with the lowest price for a copy of Tim Winton's Breath.
This title in an Australian bookstore will cost $24.95 for the paperback edition and $45 for the hardcover. Amazon.com offered the paperback for $5.41 plus shipping to our Sydney address for $9.60, total $15.51. The hardback, delivered, would be $24.95.
Book Depository, with its "free" shipping, offered the paperback at $11.77, the hardback at $21.94.
On ABEbooks, 270 booksellers on three continents offered us new copies of the paperback ranging from $1 to $14, and the hardback for about $22.
They're pretty amazing prices, as the shops doubtless have to hand over a percentage to Amazon. No wonder Australian bookshops, including the Borders chain, have been struggling.
