Spaces: A Blanco home built green and decorated with thrifty chic style
After buying and remodeling two homes, general contractor Paul Elrod couldn't shake the bug to build his own. So he and wife Amy, who live in Blanco, sold their house and moved into a rental while the new home was built.
Both love to save money. While Paul focused on “green” construction, Amy scoured resale stores, garage sales and online listings for furnishings and accessories.
Together, they designed an elegant yet comfortable home that's rock solid and energy efficient, too. On the exterior, Mason sandstone covers walls made of insulated concrete forms. The seamless, insulated metal roof teams with two tankless hot-water systems, four independent cooling/heating zones and vinyl-framed, Energy Star windows to keep monthly utility bills under $200.
Wherever he could, Paul used green-rated products for carpets, carpet padding, primer, paint — he even used a recycled-jeans product for interior insulation.
More of his touches show in architectural details, like dramatic sandstone walls, arched entryways, and towering tray and barrel ceilings. A floor-to-ceiling fireplace, built of matching Mason stone, incorporates the family's flat-screen television over the mantle.
But it's the home's earthy, sophisticated décor that gets the most raves. Though the look's stylish, Amy didn't spend big bucks to create it.
“I started thrifting as soon as we bought this acreage,” explained Amy, who works as a licensed massage therapist. “Nearly everything in our house is either repurposed or it came from a thrift store, garage sale or Craigslist. For instance, I spent $10 on our coffee table for the living room. I found it at a garage sale here in Blanco and knew it was the right size.”
Some of her other finds include ornate wall sconces for $12 each, an iron lamp for $4, and light fixtures for $12 and $28. On a tour through the home, Amy can recall where she bought her bargains and what she paid. If she paid, that is.
“My brother found that scrollwork before I did at a Blanco trash-off day,” she said, referring to a large iron piece that hangs in the couple's bedroom. “He held onto it for two years, and I never said a word. But when he trashed it, I grabbed it.”
In the foyer, a 6-foot-long oak buffet and an ornate mirror — both Craigslist finds — fill an arched niche. Under the stairs, an alcove with adjoining built-in shelves was specially designed to house a weathered chest that Amy found on a hunting trip.
