Treating the iGeneration: Getting a smart start on the school year

In transitioning from childhood to adulthood, some adolescents develop behavioral issues and/or chemical dependency that interfere with their own lives and education as well as the lives of their families.

Families and teachers frequently see behaviors that cause concern, even alarm, such as decreased school performance, texting addiction, addiction to substances, self-mutilating behaviors, defiance at home and school, irritability, family conflict, bullying and aggression.

Confidential Care, Ltd., at 720 45th St. in Munster offers therapeutic programs designed to provide the intensive level of outpatient care some in this iGeneration of 12-to 18-year olds require without putting their lives on hold.

Adolescent Behavioral Health

Adolescents who need a more intensive level of counseling than traditional weekly outpatient counseling will find that assistance through Confidential Care's Behavioral Health Psychiatric Intensive Outpatient Program.

"We help patients resolve psychiatric and substance abuse issues in a way that balances the needs of the patient, providers and the community," says Dr. Vijay Jayachandran, who heads the psychiatric practice with her husband, Dr. Sanker Jayachandran. Both are board-certified psychiatrists.

The intensive outpatient program (IOP) for adolescents encompasses multiple levels of care, including medication management, therapy, and outpatient rehab and medicine-assisted detoxification and allows the patient to be at home during recovery.

The frequency and intensity of treatment depends on each patient's needs. However, the key to Confidential Care's mission of promoting clients' self-sufficiency and improving life-management skills focuses on therapeutic clinical group and individual counseling services for a mandatory minimum of nine hours per week.

This is the only IOP run by a psychiatrist and therapist.

Adolescent Chemical Dependency Intensive Outpatient Program

Middle school and high school-aged adolescents can also experience difficulties with drug and/or alcohol use.

Confidential Care's Adolescent Chemical Dependency IOP is based on a wellness model that embraces a holistic approach and seeks to effectively stabilize individuals whose lives have been adversely affected by psychiatric and addiction issues. This strength-based program places an emphasis on individual and family counseling.

Confidential Care also offers outpatient ambulatory detoxification so patients do not have to be hospitalized. Dr. Sanker Jayachandran, with the help of the nurse practitioner, is able to give medications for addiction that's a monthly injection to prevent craving.
