FIESTA RETURNS: Santa Barbara officials, residents, tourists swarm the city for annual five-day bashThe party is officially.
Many dignitaries celebrated Wednesday the Fiesta La Guerra Plaza, in a launch event on the stage at El Mercado de la Guerra.
The vendors opened at 11 am, but the smells and sounds of the Mercado were evident even before the mayor opened the Fiesta celebrations this year.
“But the very important thing we need to do is cut the ribbon so we can get this party started. So Viva La Fiesta everybody!” Santa Barbara Mayor Helene Schneider said before making good on her promise.
This year’s Spirit of Fiesta Marisa Leon-Haro and Junior Spirit of Fiesta Anais Crespo-Peña took the stage and danced as SBPD Sergeant David Gonzales sung “The Fiesta Song” and Old Spanish Days was underway.
El Mercado de la Guerra is lined with food vendors selling just about every Mexican dish one can think of. Tacos, burritos, enchiladas, sopes, tortas, posole, taquitos, churros and tamales are all on offer, served up by non-profit groups from around Santa Barbara ranging from Casa de la Raza to Scottish Rite Language Center. For those with a little more traditional food in mind, corn dogs, funnel cake and pork sliders are within reach.
Pedro Menchaca, head of Santa Barbara High School’s Don Riders program said the Fiesta booth – where they sell corn-on-the-cob – is an important funding source for the program. The program, where children restore and customize bike low and getting ready for the advanced education, receives much of its funding from more than 80 cases of corn, they go through during Old Spanish Days.
"It was a really good resource for making money for the club," said Menchaca.
Tripp and Megan Miller of Jacksonville, Florida, found the chicken tacos al pastor and Wednesday. Holidays Millers' coincided with Fiesta, but they do not complain.
"These are really good!" Tripp said, pointing to their well-stocked tacos.
Fiesta is not just about food. Bright Fiesta dresses, jewelry of all shapes and sizes, and souvenirs ranging from mini-guitars to decorated skulls are all on sale in booths on De la Guerra Street. Face painting and slot car racing stations can also be found.

Lucha Expo Success
This years Lucha Libre Expo in Mexico City was yet another success with over 23,000 fans coming in over the two day span to buy merchandise, meet lucahdores, and check out all the great Lucha Libre action presented by pretty much every promotion in Mexico. The biggest complaint I saw was the same as last year, that CMLL charged people for autographs of their stars. Oh, and people always ask me "what do you love about Lucha?" and the Lucha Expo gives so many reasons, but look no further than:
Hot chicks in masks beating each other up, what's NOT to love?
Oh and this:
Yes, that is a Ninja Turtle diving onto another luchador.
