John Nelson Lee b. 17 Nov. 1841 d. 21 July 1914
It was a beautiful, clear morning in June in the year 1850. Nine year old John Nelson Lee looked down at his dusty shoes. He picked up each foot in turn and rubbed it on the back of his trouser leg. A smile lit his sunburned face. The shoes still looked new. He looked back at the river, Platte, they called it. He guessed he would always remember yesterday his little brother Jacob Edward was buried here.Sadness seemed to envelop and a sob escaped his mouth he turned to the west. What would happen, this new land so far away? Would it really be able to walk on the distant mountains? John picked up a stone and threw it to a cow who had stopped to eat a blade of grass. No time to stop. Mom and Dad had long talked about joining the Saints in the valley of Salt Lake City. Now they were really on their way.
John thought of the prayer of his father, Francis Lee, was offered this morning. He asked a good trip to the Salt Lake Valley, they could find peace and rest with the saints. He remembers when they left Nauvoo. The sky was red with fire. The beautiful temple and a few houses were burning. He hoped they were not. He loved that house with all the love a child of nine years a.
On and on they went. Every day seemed to be the last. SSCO cows, but they seemed to know that there was a need to keep moving. Every night, John ate dinner, then knelt by his bed, sometimes asleep before his prayers were over.
He could see the mountains today and the day seemed a little cooler.
One day he stepped on a stone. He injured his foot when he took his shoes at bedtime, he found a hole had worn through the sole. The next morning his mother, Jane Vail Johnson Lee, fixed something to put in his shoes, but they soon wear. He had come to the walk to join the saints. He walked barefoot, trying to watch where he walked, but at night his feet were covered with blood and dirt, and oh, how they hurt. Jane Vail bathed the feet hurt and gently rubbed with lotion healing. The next morning she cut the cloth that hung under the car and wrapped his feet. This procedure lasted until they reached the valley.
