Cover Story: Coupons to the Extreme
Katie Crow says the best deals are found when shoppers combine store coupons with manufacturer coupons, especially if coupled to purchase an item already on sale. (Stuff like body wash, toothpaste, razors, floss and condiments can even end up free in some cases.) Heres how a few deals broke down during Crows recent shopping trip to Target.Bengay

Accompanying her list is a binder, full of coupons she expects to use on her shopping trip. It sits open and propped up on the cart as she criss-crosses the Target store with purpose: first drug store items, then office supplies, then cosmetics, then finally groceries.
As Crow hands over an inch-thick stack of coupons to the hot-pink-haired cashier, a middle-aged woman behind her watches with interest.
Are you an extreme couponer? she asks.
Yes, Crow, 24, says.
The term extreme couponer has entered the pop culture lexicon, thanks to TLCs Extreme Couponing. The hit show chronicles the lives of fanatical shoppers who stockpile household items bought at grocery and drug stores at deep discounts, and house years worth of goods on wall-to-wall shelving units. Though the idea of stockpiling goods may seem a bit, well, extreme, shoppers like Crow save thousands of dollars per year. Crow estimates savings of $500 a month, advancing her familys goal of being debt-free in 15 years.
